Biography

As Autumn Calls is a death/doom metal band from Sudbury, Ontario, Canada. The band was formed in 2005 by Andrew Ilves and James Hawkins. The band name As Autumn Calls was taken from the Estatic Fear song found on the 'Somnium Obmutum album. Between 2005 and 2008 the duo wrote and recorded what was to be their debut release An Autumn Departure. The album featured 10 tracks of classic syle death doom but was never released due to production and recording issues. The desicion was made to put the album on hold indefinitley and focus new material.

In the spring of 2009 As Autumn Calls recorded a three song EP titled Emotionless. Emotionless saw the band simplify things and move towards a darker, bleaker sound. Lyrically the songs drifted away from the romantic themes of An Autumn Departure and moved towards a more introverted and sullen theme. The three songs, "Isolation", "Emotionless" and "Resignation" are meant to flow together as part of one story. Emotionless was recorded and mixed by As Autumn Calls and mastered by Darren Favot at Sardonic Moon Studio in Sudbury, Ontario. It was self-released in December 2009, limited to just 50 copies on CD-R.

The release of the Emotionless EP slowly gained the band some attention in the underground metal scene and in 2010 the band was approached by the Canadian metal label The Northern Cold Productions to do a one-off release on cassette tape. Andrew and James thought this was a good opportunity to revisit An Autumn Departure and over the next several months reworked and re-recorded the album. The original track listing of An Autumn Departure was changed to make room for a cover of Katatonia's song "Murder" since Katatonia was a major influence in the early days of As Autumn Calls. The cassette was strictly limited to 100 copies and was released in March 2011.

In the Fall of 2011 Brendan Peacock joined the band as a second guitarist and for the first time As Autumn Calls featured a full line-up. With this new line-up in place the guys began work on their second full length release Cold, Black & Everlasting. The album is an expansion on the theme and concepts of 2009's Emotionless EP. As with the EP the songs on Cold, Black & Everlasting flow together musically and lyrically to tell a story of the constant, internal struggle to find peace and contentment in life. Cold, Black & Everlasting was released in October 2013 through Naturmacht Productions' newly formed doom metal sub label Rain Without End Records.
